Deveronside 3

Deveronside boss Colin Legge urged his side to take encouragement from their 3-1 Scottish Communities Cup victory over Scone Thistle back to their North of Scotland League campaign.

Deversonside netted an early goal through Harry Innes and though Scone levelled the tie with a Lewis Anderson header, the away team dominated the second half and secured their advancement to round three with goals from Ryan Catto and Aaron Petrie.

Legge said: It was a good, battling performance from us today. We’ve had a tough start to the season but I’ve seen good progress and delighted that it resulted in a win.

“This result needs to be the benchmark for our season. There was some excellent football on show today and I want to see that week in, week out.

“Scone had the better of it in the first half but we were much improved after the restart and they struggled to deal with our style of play.

“I told the players that away wins like this in the [Scottish Communities] Cup can spur them on for the rest of the season. It’s time now to kick on and make a good impression in the North of Scotland Premier League.”

It would take just three minutes for Deveronside to break the deadlock. Caden Beaton rounded the encroaching goalkepper and rolled the ball across the face of the goal for Innes to tap in at point blank range.

Scone reacted quickly and equalised in the 10th minute. Sean Hastie curled in a shot that was saved, but the rebound fell to the head of Anderson who nodded home from 6 yards.

The home side were in the ascendancy and had numerous chances to take the lead in the first half. Arran Thomson came closest but his shot was repelled by Deveronside goalkeeper Liam Gibb.

After the restart it was all about Deveronside and after a couple of warning shots, they took the lead on the hour mark. Jody Munro took the latest in a slew of corners and Catto rose highest to score.

With 15 minutes to play Deveronside secured victory. Blair White crossed the ball in for substitute Petrie and despite the poor connection, it was enough to trickle into the net.

Hastie had a golden opportunity to pull one back for the hosts in the dying moments but fired wide after being played through by Anderson.

Scone are back in Midland League action against East Craigie on Wednesday whilst Deveronside welcome Glentanar in the Grill League Cup.
