University of Aberdeen FC retain the Granite City accolades for the second year after a dogged 2-0 victory over Robert Gordon University at Garthdee. In a frantic game that lacked goalmouth action, Joe Prior had the Blues ahead late in the first half, before a stoppage time strike from Finlay Armstrong sealed a gritty win for the visitors, who finished with 10 men.
Aberdeen Uni had the brighter start but an injury to goalkeeper Oscar Pirie unsettled the side as they searched for an opener. Despite his best efforts, Pirie was unable to continue and captain Josh Lewis had to step back from defense to pick up the gloves.
But the Blues would soon forget their woes when Prior collected a long ball through the middle of the RGU defense and slotted past Owen Gordon to take the lead in the 37th minute.
The second half saw sustained pressure by AU as they searched to double their advantage, with Armstrong and Andrew McConnell combining for the latter to shoot just wide after 51 minutes.
RGU had pace but little composure with a great opportunity squandered by Daniels Ihemadu who fired high and wide from the edge of the box on the hour mark.
As the game reached its conclusion temperatures raised and AU found themselves with 10 men after Jonathan Onwa received his marching orders for two yellows in the 90th minute.
RGU threw caution to the wind but left themselves vulnerable to a counter attack which was finished beautifully after Armstrong had covered half the length of the pitch before curling his effort into the far corner in the 95th minute.
In the end it was back to the lecture theatre for RGU as Aberdeen Uni saw out a deserved victory.
