Whilst watching Clachnacuddin at Grant Street Park one Saturday, Bruce Walker received a message from his brother. He was standing in the grounds of Windsor Castle, smiling with an OBE bestowed for services in the British Government.

To be cheeky, Bruce replied with his half-eaten pie.

Then the next week, another half-eaten pie.

Then another.

Then another.

Until one week, Bruce’s brother exclaimed: “You could write a book about all of these pies!”

And that’s what Bruce did. Throughout the 2022/23 season, the avid football fan toured the length and breadth of Scotland, in search of the perfect pie.

Going ground to ground, Bruce not only recorded how tasty the pie was, but also the friendliness of those he met along the way and any interesting remarks of each club visited.

Bruce’s favourite pie from the first book was to be found at Whitehill Welfare in Rosewell, but he latterly discovered they had switched to a mass-produced alternative.

But Bruce also had a new itch to scratch. With around 160 clubs of the 249 across the non-league Scottish pyramid yet to visit, he knew that another book was on the horizon- one that could complete his dairy of every non-league team in the country.

Over the next two seasons, the groundhopper went to the furthest corners of Scotland to tick off each and every ground, once again tasting the pies and noting his experiences.

From rouge pitch inspections on a chilly February morning in Thurso to ankle fractures in Berwick, ‘Pitches and Pies 2’ is full of fun anecdotes and stories relatable to any fan of lower-league football.
