Westdyke recover from a double-header of defeats at New Elgin to dent Stoneywood Parkvale’s promotion hopes with a 2-0 victory at Stauff Park. Calum Slavin had Westdyke ahead at the break before Nathan Manders’ last gasp killer bumped the Westhill side up to 11th place, whilst Stoneywood stay in 5th position.
A couple of early chances set the tone for either side, with defences looking alert to prevent any quick goals. Stoneywood then took control and looked the likelier team to find an opener, but it was Westdyke who took a lead into half-time.
Manders collected a long diagonal and placed the ball in front of Slavin, who poked his effort goalwards with his weaker foot, slotting home off the post in the 39th minute.
Stoneywood started the second half with a vengeance and dominated the ball until the hour mark, when they found themselves down to 10-men.
Stoneywood captain Jordan Reid received a straight red card for some choice words towards the referee, which turned the tides in Westdyke’s favour. They took control and managed the game well towards its conclusion.
With darkness descending over Dyce, Stoneywood threw cation to the wind and pushed bodies forward. Westdyke defended resolutely and claimed a killer second through Manders, who caught Daniel Cummings by suprise to slot home in the 95th minute. The referee blew the final whistle moments later, but not before sending off Stoneywood substitute Oliver Stewart for some more verbals.
It was also debut delight for 15-year-old keeper Aidan McElroy who made some strong saves to keep his clean sheet intact.
