Banks o’ Dee stay within reach of the of the title contenders with a 1-0 victory over Formartine United. The Dee get back to winning ways- edging closer to Brechin after their draw against Keith- with a solitary first half strike from Jevan Anderson ending Formartine’s three game winning streak.
The Dee won an early corner and took the lead through Jevan Anderson in the 8th minute. The ball was headed back across the box by Mark Reynolds, flicked on by Anderson before glancing off the crossbar and in.
Formartine pressed forward in search of an equaliser and almost found a way through when Reynolds’ slack pass-back was intercepted by Julian Wade. The Dominican striker beat keeper Daniel Hoban with a chipped effort but the ball rolled wide of the goal.
Aided by the wind, Banks o’ Dee pushed on and almost managed to double their lead through captain Mark Gilmour, with his 30-plus yard effort glancing over the bar. Gilmour was involved again, curling in an enticing ball for Lachie MacLeod to head goalwards. Formartine keeper Ewen MacDonald was alert to turn the ball out for a corner at his near post.
With half time approaching at Spain Park, Graham Rodger’s inviting cross caused trouble for Hoban, who had to fight with Wade to claw the ball away to safety.
Robert Ward had the first chance of the second half, turning in a tight spot to gain a yard before drilling the ball wide of Hoban’s goal.
On the hour mark Michael Phillipson curled in an inviting cross, with Liam Duell just missing the header at a full diving stretch in the 6 yard box.
Philipson and Gilmour combined to turn a free-kick into a drilled shot from the captain, that was blocked by the crowd in the Formartine box.
Stuart Anderson made an attacking minded substitution with 15 minutes to play, bring off first half change Grant Moroney for striker Scott Adams. He managed to wrestle off Reynolds to win a corner from his cross, which almost paved they way for a spectacular equaliser. Glenn Murison attempted an audacious overhead kick from outside the box after the ball was cleared, with his crowd-silencing effort glancing just over the bar.
Formartine struggled to threaten The Dee with the clock ticking ever closer to full time, and referee Scott Leslie called an end to proceedings after 3 minutes of added time.
