Mark Smith has returned to Jeanfield Swifts with Lowland League aspirations in mind. The 28-year-old striker links up with the Swifts for a second time, with spells at Kinnoull and Sauchie Juniors before returning to the Riverside Stadium. It was an ideal start for Smith, with two goals and an assist in Jeanfield’s 3-0 win over derby rivals Luncarty at the end of 2024.

‘It was great to make an instant impact’

Smith’s goal involvements lifted Jeanfield to third in the table, with matches in hand over rival teams.

He said: “It was really good to hit the ground running in my returning debut against Luncarty.”

“Coming back into the team after a period away, I wanted to prove myself and show that I could contribute immediately.”

“Scoring two and grabbing an assist gives me confidence and momentum moving forward”

“It was great to make an instant impact and demonstrate that I can help the squad out and push on in the second half of the season.”

‘Linking up with Robbie has been really positive’

Robbie Holden held high praise for Smith when Jeanfield faced Sauchie last season, with the pair linking up for the first time at the Riverside stadium.

He said: “I had a good few conversations with Robbie and he had plenty of positive things to say with his plans going forward.”

“Jeanfield have had some great results in the Scottish cup recently and there are high calibre players within the squad”

“Robbie’s praise was really encouraging, and it’s been great working alongside him and his team, His vision and understanding of the game complement my own playing style, so it’s been a smooth integration.”

“I learnt a lot at Sauchie, especially in terms of adapting to different game situations. I’ve developed a better understanding of how to read the game and how to bring intensity and creativity, both on and off the ball. I hope I can bring this to Jeanfield and further improve overall performances.”

‘We have the quality within the squad to challenge at the top’

Jeanfield are looking likely to finish the season in one of the top spots, alongside current leaders Musselburgh Athletic and Hill of Beath Hawthorn, and Smith believes the East of Scotland Premier title is possible.
He said: “If we can win all our games in hand, we’d definitely be right in the mix with Musselburgh and Hill of Beath, and we still have matches against these sides”.

“There’s no doubt that a strong push for the title and Lowland League qualification is within reach. We have the quality within the squad to challenge at the top, and with the right mentality and focus towards these upcoming fixtures we can make a genuine push.”

“The key will be maintaining consistency and managing the pressure that comes with these big games. If we can keep our performances up and stay focused, we’ll be in a great position to challenge for the title. We know it won’t be easy, but the opportunity is there, and we’re ready to do it.”
