My first article ‘A guide to football in Aberdeen‘ was typed up one year ago today without ever visiting the grounds I spoke about, referring to Google for some sparse information of the teams. I could hardly understand how the pyramid system worked or if an amateur team counted as the step below juniors. In that sense, I guess I’ve made a decent step in understanding the game beyond the SPFL, something I never had the chance to do before moving to Aberdeen for university.

Delting, Brae, Shetland.

It would be easy to fill this page with a rank of best and worst experiences etc (although Lerwick Spurs was the best and Forfar was the worst), but every week I feel I learn a little more, even if the subsequent match report or review is a bit rubbish, there is still value to me after each game attended. Quite often the worst articles are because I am too busy listening to an interesting story to make worthwhile notes on the game.

Banchory St Ternan, Crathes.

What is less obvious in my articles, is how many enthusiastic and convivial people made time for me, sharing their esoteric and fascinating knowledge of the club they dedicate time to and making me feel welcome at every opportunity. This is undoubtedly what I enjoy most on my footballing travels, and really appreciate all the support. A quick chat with likeminded football fans easily makes up for all the awkward moments of people wondering why I’ve come to their match to write a report.

Dyce FC, Aberdeen.

I finish the year with about 50% of Highland League and North Region JFA stadia visited, with a handful of others ticked off the seemingly endless list of grounds across the North East and beyond. As much as I want to press on and 100% my local leagues, I’d like to revisit so many of the grounds I’ve been to this year to catch up with those involved. Whatever I get up to next year, I’ve no doubt it’ll be just as enjoyable.

Hermes FC, Bridge of Don, Aberdeen

To anyone who religiously reads, or just whenever your team is mentioned, thank you for the support.

Oliver.
